Meeting, DECEMBER 31 at 1pm

We will hold a meeting December 31 at 1pm at Mills Elementary in the cafeteria for Mills parents only.  Mrs. Butler and the Mills boundary reps will answer questions and give some details for speaking at the community meeting that will be held on January 5 at 6:00 at Clayton Elementary.  We do not have a paper copy of the newest map, called Plan 2, but it can be found here.

Here are the capacity numbers from the Plan 2 map.

  1. This is an excellent idea. Thanks to those of you who are making this happen during the winter break.

  3. Zoning problems at Mills (and the rest of the schools) can be fixed by simply moving all or part of area 49 out of Oak Hill. They are the stumbling block to this very solvable problem. They are also the only section that track to O'Henry MS and if they all move to Sunset Valley, that opens up a lot of movement and flexibility for all the schools west of Mopac without affecting feeder pattern. Mills can also have the option to rezone portions to Patton. I elaborate here: http://sites.google.com/site/swaustinelementary/

  4. Wow...Cindy, I'm impressed. I've had the same thoughts, but I haven't come up with the impressive data and proof that you have. Well done...I agree whole-heartedly with you.

  5. Way to go Cindy, the analysis is great, and your point about the value of a common system whereby all plans and proposals can be evaluated dispassionately is spot on.

I assume that most people in the task force, (reps, staff, and facilitator) read this blog from time to time and I hope they look at your web site, and hire you to write the analysis algorithm. I'll volunteer to write the mapping software to let everyone play with their own boundaries and compute accurate populations instantly.

The point is that the ad hoc discussion and voting process, the 100% subjective evaluation of proprosals, the emotion-filled appeals for votes, all compound the understandable fear that everyone has that the plan will go haywire at any moment. A resaonable addition to the meeting process, such as Cindy's system, would provide a more smooth, predictable, objective starting point for the discussion and the vote.

I observed at the last meeting that some comments were ridiculed, repeated questions were met with irritation and disrespect, complex issues were oversimplified and attempts to rebut insults and accusations were cut off. This impressed me as a display of raw political power. Indeed this is a political process and manuevering and manipulation are to be expected.

But lets try to add a bit of fairness through math.

  6. Cindy -
This is terrific work. Thank you for taking the time to sort through this and find a viable solution that seems to benefit all.

    Michelle & Lisa -
Again, thank you for the meeting today. It was helpful to hear the information in person and have the ability to ask questions. You both have done an outstanding job!

  7. Cindy shared a few more details with me.

Her plan differs from Plan 1 and Plan 2, by sending the sections of Mills now slated to move to Boone, and moves them to Patton, which is within vertical tracking.

Vintage Place and Park Place are moved to Kiker and CCN stays at Mills. (same as Plan1)

Just to be clear about what she's proposed.

  8. I agree that the tracking needs to be corrected in Plan 2, but I do not understand why the areas east of Beckett are being singled out to move to Patton. Out of the 6 areas that track to Small, at 6 miles, area 96H3 is the furthest.

  9. Using SV to relieve Oak Hill means Mills can rezone to Kiker and Patton. Play Y is just one example of the many many possibilities. But first, we all need to urge AISD and the task force to, at the very least, put area 49 up for discussion. This area has not been discussed and voted on like all the other contentious areas. Please include this in your comment cards in addition to your own area's concerns. Beyond Jan. 5, it is unclear how much the public will have a say in this process.

I've updated the excel file and added a map and a new section, plan ??, where anyone can play with the data. Details here:
